If you’ve ever walked upstairs on a hot summer afternoon and wondered why it feels ten degrees warmer than the rest of the house, you’re not alone.
After more than 25 years working on HVAC systems throughout Plymouth, Wayzata, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, Medina, and the surrounding Twin Cities, this is one of the most common comfort complaints I hear.
The first thing that goes through my mind isn’t, “You need a bigger air conditioner.”
Honestly, that’s usually one of the last things I think about.
One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is assuming that if the upstairs is hot, the air conditioner must be too small.
In many cases, that’s simply not true.
I’ve been in plenty of homes where the homeowner had already replaced the air conditioner with a larger unit, only to discover the upstairs was still uncomfortable.
That’s because air conditioners don’t fix airflow problems.
A hot upstairs is a symptom.
My job is to figure out what’s causing it.
The goal isn’t to install the biggest air conditioner.
The goal is to make your entire home comfortable.
Comfort Is About More Than Your Air Conditioner
When I investigate a home with a hot upstairs, I don’t start by looking at the size of the equipment.
I start by looking at how the entire home works together.
Questions I ask include:
- Is enough conditioned air actually reaching the second floor?
- Are the balancing dampers adjusted correctly?
- Does the upstairs have enough return air?
- Is the attic properly insulated?
- How much afternoon sun is heating the upstairs rooms?
- Are there any airflow restrictions?
Those questions usually lead us to the real answer.
Comfort isn’t just about the air conditioner.
It’s about how the entire home delivers, circulates, and holds conditioned air.
A Real Example From a Home in Wayzata
One project I’ll never forget involved a two story home in Wayzata.
Every summer the homeowners dealt with the same problem.
The main floor was comfortable.
The upstairs bedrooms were miserable.
One of the kids had actually started sleeping downstairs because his bedroom never cooled off.
By the time I arrived, they had already convinced themselves they needed a larger air conditioner.
I told them, “Maybe. But let’s not spend your money until we know that’s actually the problem.”
The first thing I checked was the air conditioner.
Refrigerant charge looked good.
Temperature readings were exactly where they should be.
The equipment was operating properly.
That immediately told me the air conditioner wasn’t the problem.
Next, I started evaluating the house.
The airflow reaching the upstairs registers was much lower than it should have been.
When I followed the ductwork through the basement, I found several balancing dampers that had never been adjusted correctly after the house was built.
Most of the conditioned air was being delivered to the main floor.
The upstairs was getting whatever happened to be left over.
Then we inspected the attic.
The insulation had settled over the years, especially around the outside walls, allowing additional heat to enter the upstairs living space.
Together, those two issues created the perfect recipe for uncomfortable bedrooms.
We adjusted the airflow, recommended improving the attic insulation, and made a few additional airflow improvements.
Later that summer the homeowner called and told me it was the first time they had actually enjoyed being upstairs in July.
If we had simply replaced the air conditioner, they probably would have spent thousands of dollars and still had the same problem.
Comfort problems are usually detective work.
You have to find the actual cause before you can recommend the right solution.
The Most Common Reasons an Upstairs Gets Hot
After more than 25 years in the HVAC industry, I’ve learned there isn’t one universal answer.
In fact, two houses built by the same builder can have the exact same complaint for completely different reasons.
Some of the most common causes include:
Poor Airflow
One of the biggest issues is simply not getting enough conditioned air upstairs.
This may be caused by improperly adjusted dampers, poorly balanced ductwork, or restrictions within the system.
Inadequate Return Air
Most homeowners notice the vents blowing cold air.
Very few think about where the warm air goes.
Without enough return air upstairs, your HVAC system can’t circulate air efficiently.
It’s almost like trying to breathe through a straw.
Attic Heat
During the summer, attic temperatures can become extremely hot.
If insulation has settled or there are air leaks between the attic and the living space, that heat continually works its way into your upstairs rooms.
Afternoon Sun
Large windows facing the afternoon sun can introduce a tremendous amount of heat into upstairs bedrooms.
Your air conditioner has to remove every bit of that heat.
Dirty Air Filters
A clogged air filter reduces airflow throughout the entire home.
It’s one of the simplest things homeowners can check themselves.
Blocked Registers
Furniture, rugs, curtains, or even a bed covering a floor register can reduce airflow enough to affect comfort.
Sometimes solving a comfort problem is as simple as allowing air to move freely.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that comfort problems are usually a combination of several small issues instead of one major problem.
That’s why I don’t walk into a house looking for one magic fix.
I look at how the entire home works together.
Things Homeowners Can Check
There are several simple things homeowners can safely check before scheduling an HVAC evaluation.
Replace a dirty air filter.
Make sure all supply registers are fully open.
Move furniture or rugs away from floor registers.
Check that curtains aren’t blocking airflow.
Notice whether the airflow upstairs feels weaker than downstairs.
Those simple observations can provide valuable information.
Once you get into balancing dampers, measuring airflow, checking static pressure, inspecting ductwork, or evaluating insulation, that’s where professional testing becomes important.
Should You Close Downstairs Vents?
This is probably one of the most common pieces of advice homeowners hear from friends and neighbors.
“If your upstairs is hot, just close all the vents downstairs.”
It sounds logical.
Unfortunately, HVAC systems don’t really work that way.
Your furnace and air conditioner are designed to move a specific amount of air.
Closing a large number of vents increases pressure inside the ductwork and can actually reduce overall airflow.
In some situations, it can even contribute to frozen evaporator coils.
Does that mean you can never make small adjustments?
Not at all.
If one room downstairs is always much colder than the rest of the house, making a small adjustment may help improve balance.
But closing half the vents throughout your home usually treats the symptom instead of solving the cause.
Does Lowering the Thermostat Help?
Another common strategy is lowering the thermostat to sixty six or sixty seven degrees hoping the upstairs will eventually cool off.
The problem is that the thermostat is usually located on the main floor.
Once the main floor reaches the set temperature, the air conditioner shuts off even if the upstairs is still several degrees warmer.
Lowering the thermostat may eventually cool the upstairs a little more.
It will also make the main floor much colder, increase energy use, and add unnecessary run time to the equipment.
It doesn’t solve the reason the upstairs is hot.
Your thermostat controls temperature.
It doesn’t solve comfort problems.
Comfort isn’t something you force by lowering the thermostat.
It’s something you achieve by getting the system balanced correctly.
My Advice to Homeowners
If I could leave homeowners with one piece of advice, it would be this.
Don’t assume your upstairs is hot because your air conditioner is too small.
Sometimes it is.
Many times it isn’t.
I’ve seen homes where balancing the ductwork solved the problem.
I’ve seen homes where additional attic insulation made a bigger difference than replacing the equipment.
I’ve also seen zoning systems completely transform how comfortable a home feels.
Every house has its own personality.
Every family uses their home differently.
Every comfort problem deserves to be properly evaluated before someone starts spending money.
I’ve heard people say, “That’s just how two story houses are.”
I don’t believe that.
Can they be more challenging to keep comfortable?
Absolutely.
But in most cases there’s a reason one floor is uncomfortable.
Once you find the reason, you can usually make it dramatically better.
I’ve always believed my job isn’t just to repair furnaces or air conditioners.
My job is to make homes comfortable.
Sometimes that means repairing equipment.
Sometimes it means improving airflow.
Sometimes it means recommending insulation, duct modifications, or zoning.
Whatever the solution is, it should solve the actual problem instead of simply covering up the symptom.
At the end of the day, homeowners don’t really care what the solution is.
They simply want to walk upstairs in July and have it feel just as comfortable as the rest of the house.
That’s exactly what I want for them too.
