Why Is My AC Running but Not Cooling My House?

Every summer we get the same phone call.

“My air conditioner is running, but my house just isn’t getting cool.”

After more than 25 years working on HVAC systems throughout Plymouth, Wayzata, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, Medina, and the surrounding Twin Cities, I can tell you this is one of the most common air conditioning problems homeowners experience.

The first thing that goes through my mind isn’t, “They need a new air conditioner.”

It’s much simpler than that.

I ask myself, “What part of the system isn’t doing its job?”

That’s because an air conditioner is really just a collection of components working together. When one part stops doing its job, the entire system struggles.

The good news is that many times the solution is much simpler than homeowners expect.

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve pulled into a driveway and had someone meet me outside saying, “I’m pretty sure we’re buying a new air conditioner today.”

My response is almost always the same.

“Let’s slow down and find out what’s actually wrong.”

Sometimes it’s a dirty filter that’s frozen the evaporator coil into a block of ice.

Sometimes the outdoor condenser is packed with cottonwood and can’t get rid of heat.

Sometimes it’s a failed capacitor, a thermostat setting, or another relatively simple repair.

Other times the homeowner is right, and the system truly has reached the end of its life.

But I never want to have that conversation until I know exactly what’s wrong.

That’s why I’ve always believed diagnosis comes first and recommendations come second.

Start With the Simple Things

One of my favorite parts of this job is helping homeowners avoid an unnecessary service call.

I’d much rather talk someone through a five minute fix than have them pay me to come out if they don’t have to.

Before calling for service, there are a few safe things every homeowner should check.

Check the Thermostat

It sounds obvious, but it’s amazing how often the thermostat is accidentally switched to the wrong mode, the schedule changes unexpectedly, or someone bumps the settings without realizing it.

Make sure it’s set to cooling and that the temperature is below the current room temperature.

Check the Air Filter

A clogged air filter is one of the most common causes of poor cooling.

If the filter is packed with dust and debris, airflow becomes restricted.

Eventually the evaporator coil can freeze over, preventing the system from cooling your home properly.

If your filter looks like it belongs in a vacuum cleaner, it’s time to replace it.

Look at the Outdoor Unit

Walk outside and inspect your condenser.

Is the fan running?

Is the unit covered with cottonwood, leaves, grass clippings, or weeds?

Here in Minnesota, cottonwood can clog an outdoor unit surprisingly fast.

If it’s dirty, gently rinse the outside of the coil with a garden hose.

Never use a pressure washer because it can damage the delicate fins.

Check the Breaker

Occasionally a breaker trips and only part of the system continues operating.

It’s a simple thing to check before assuming there’s a major problem.

Pay Attention to the Symptoms

Your air conditioner often tells you what’s wrong before a technician ever arrives.

Ask yourself:

  • Is cool air coming from the vents?
  • Has airflow become weaker than normal?
  • Is the outdoor unit running?
  • Is there ice on the refrigerant line?
  • Do you hear the outdoor unit trying to start?

Those observations can help speed up the diagnosis.

Know When to Stop Troubleshooting

Once you’ve completed the basic checks, it’s time to let a professional take over.

Don’t start opening electrical panels.

Don’t try adding refrigerant.

Don’t guess.

Refrigerant isn’t something that gets used up.

If refrigerant is low, there’s a leak somewhere that needs to be found and repaired.

I’ve seen homeowners turn a relatively inexpensive repair into a much larger repair because they guessed wrong.

Do the simple, safe checks yourself.

Once electricity, refrigerant, or sealed system components are involved, it’s worth having someone who works on these systems every day diagnose the problem.

Why Diagnosis Matters

One service call from Plymouth has always stayed with me.

The homeowner told me the air conditioner ran all day, the fan was blowing, but the house kept getting warmer.

They had already changed the filter, checked the thermostat, and cleaned the outdoor unit after watching a YouTube video.

Honestly, they’d done everything I would have recommended before calling.

When I arrived, nothing immediately stood out.

The outdoor unit was running.

The indoor blower was running.

Air was coming out of the vents.

But something wasn’t right.

Instead of guessing, I started taking measurements.

I checked the temperature difference across the evaporator coil.

I connected my gauges.

I checked compressor performance and refrigerant pressures.

The problem turned out to be a refrigerant leak in the evaporator coil.

The homeowner had no way of knowing that.

From their perspective, the system looked perfectly normal.

That’s why experience matters.

I’ve also seen situations where another contractor wanted to add refrigerant because they assumed the system was low.

After testing everything, I found the actual problem was a restricted metering device.

Adding refrigerant would have made the system perform even worse.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that many completely different problems create the exact same symptom.

The house isn’t cooling.

That’s all the homeowner knows.

To an experienced HVAC technician, that symptom could point to a refrigerant leak, restricted airflow, a failing compressor, a bad capacitor, a dirty coil, a faulty metering device, or several other issues.

That’s why I don’t show up with an opinion.

I show up with gauges, meters, and years of experience to gather the facts.

Then I explain everything in plain English.

That’s the difference between being a parts changer and being a technician.

Does My Air Conditioner Need to Be Repaired or Replaced?

This is probably the question I hear more than any other.

“Be honest. Do I really need a new air conditioner?”

My answer is almost always the same.

“I don’t know yet.”

That’s probably not the answer most homeowners expect, but it’s the honest one.

I’ve learned you can’t make a recommendation until you know exactly what’s wrong.

Age matters.

But it’s far from the only thing I look at.

I’ve seen twenty year old systems still running well because they were maintained properly.

I’ve also seen eight year old systems with major problems because they weren’t.

The first question is always what failed.

A failed capacitor is usually a straightforward repair.

A bad contactor usually isn’t a reason to replace the entire system.

A refrigerant leak requires a different conversation.

A failed compressor requires another.

I also look at the overall condition of the equipment.

Has this system needed frequent repairs?

Are replacement parts still available?

Is the indoor equipment in good condition?

If I honestly believe a repair will give you several more years of reliable service, I’m going to recommend repairing it.

If a major repair on an aging system is only delaying the inevitable, I’ll explain why replacement may be the better investment.

Notice I said I’ll explain it.

I’m never going to pressure someone into replacing their air conditioner.

My job is to give you the facts, answer your questions, and help you make an informed decision.

I’ve always believed in one simple philosophy.

Repair it when it makes sense.

Replace it when it makes sense.

Don’t let the calendar decide.

Don’t let fear decide.

Let the condition of the equipment and the facts decide.

My Advice to Homeowners

If I could leave homeowners with one piece of advice, it would be this.

Don’t ignore the problem.

But don’t assume the worst either.

I see both mistakes all the time.

Some homeowners wait for weeks hoping the problem will fix itself.

Meanwhile the system runs longer, utility bills increase, and a small repair sometimes becomes a much larger one.

Others immediately assume they need a brand new air conditioner.

Most of the time, neither approach is the right one.

Check the thermostat.

Replace the filter.

Make sure the outdoor unit is clean.

If everything looks normal and your home still isn’t cooling, don’t continue forcing the system to run day after day.

Have it inspected before the problem gets worse.

After more than 25 years in this industry, I’ve learned that air conditioners usually give you warning signs before they completely fail.

Maybe they’re running longer than normal.

Maybe the house feels more humid.

Maybe the cooling just isn’t what it used to be.

Those are the system’s way of telling you something isn’t right.

The sooner you find out what that is, the more options you usually have.

Most importantly, remember that you don’t have to guess.

That’s our job.

Your job is simply to notice when something has changed.

Our job is to figure out why.

If it’s a simple repair, I’ll tell you it’s a simple repair.

If replacing the system truly is the best option, I’ll explain why.

Either way, you’ll understand exactly what I found, what your options are, and why I’m recommending them.

Because after all these years, I’ve learned that homeowners aren’t looking for someone to sell them an air conditioner.

They’re looking for someone they can trust to tell them the truth.
